(December 13, 1944 - May 4, 2007)

Royce Clifton Hembree, age 62, of Houston, Alabama passed away Friday, May 4, 2007, at his residence.

Mr. Hembree was employed for many years in both the commercial and residential areas of heating and air conditioning. He also spent several years in service with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s office in Louisiana and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam era.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 9, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at the Graveside in Houston Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev Glenn Bridgeman will officiate. A United States Air Force detail will provide military honors.

Mr. Henderson passed away quietly at his residence May 8, 2007. He was 96 years old. He was a barber in the Double Springs area for many years and served as a school bus driver for years with the Winston County School System.

Jones, Dorothy D. - Age 86 - Florence, AL

Mrs. Dorothy Dean Pifer Jones died from heart failure May 6, 2007 at UAB Hospital. Born Oct. 11, 1921 in Sullivan, IL, she and her mother and brother moved to Haleyville, AL in 1925. Married to Robert Noble Jones of Reform, AL in 1948, she lived in Florence until recently.

She is survived by four children: J. Michael G. Jones of N. Fort Myers, FL; Mildred B. Haworth of Wichita, KS; Robert Stanley Jones of Haleyville, AL; and Eric A. Jones of St. Florian.

Special thanks are extended to manager Monica Brimer and the staff of Azalea Manor Assisted Living in Haleyville; to nurses Karena and Sandra and the staff of UAB Hospital; to Greenview Funeral Services; and to friends and family.

"Ma" was laid to rest on May 6th, beside her husband of 34 years, at Greenview Memorial.

ESTES, J.B., age 64 of Winfield in the Rock City Community, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2007, at his residence.

Mr. Estes was born November 19, 1942, in Winfield, Alabama to the late Grady Evan and Edna Mae Pickens Estes. He was a life-long resident of Marion County in the Rock City Community. He was retired from coal hauling. He was previously employed at Clifford Industries in Winfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth King, Martha Estes and Mary Estes; brothers, Jack, James and Eugene Estes.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Herren Estes, Winfield; sons, Tim (Libby) Estes, Jeff, Joey and Jason Estes, Winfield; 5 grandchildren, Stephanie, Hunter, Mason, Mackenzie, and Joseph Grady Estes; 2 great-grandchildren - Lexi and Laiken Estes; sister, Betty Jo Tucker, Winfield; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Lynn Ingram Mather; and an infant brother.

Lavelle Roberts Odom, age 89, formerly of Amory and Lamar County, Alabama, died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Home Place in Columbus.

She was born Nov. 8, 1917, in the Splunge community in Monroe County to the late Charlie Roberts and Lonnie Belle Lee. She attended Greenwood Springs School and was an active member of East Amory Baptist Church before moving to Home Place. Before retiring to Amory, she lived in Zion, Ill., where she worked at Fire Guard in Northbrook, Ill. After retirement she lived in Amory for several years, where she enjoyed church activities, gardening and visiting with relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at the Otts Funeral Home Chapel in Sulligent, AL. Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery near Detroit, AL.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Survivors include one daughter, Judith Gibbs of Hamilton; and two grandsons, William Odom of Chicago, Ill., and Jeremy Odom of Schaumburg, Ill.

Lucy McCaleb, 102, Guin, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2007, at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Guin.

She was born on March 2, 1905, to the late Charles Louis and Matilda Agnes Franks Russell. She was a graduate of Florence State Teachers College, taught in a one room school in Columbus, Miss., for many years, and taught at Winfield Elementary School for 42 years. She was an active member of the Winfield Church of Christ and was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Book Lover’s Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mack McCaleb; four sisters; and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at 3 p.m. from the Randy Lawrence Memorial Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home of Winfield with burial in the West Alabama Memorial Gardens in Gu-Win. James Wyers officiating.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2007 at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Red Bay, Ala., with Bro. Steve Ledbetter officiating. Burial will be in Florence City Cemetery in Florence, Ala.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today and until service time Sunday.

Taylor, Rev. J. Duane - Age 65 - Muscle Shoals, AL

Rev. J. Duane Taylor, age 65, of Muscle Shoals, went home to Heaven on May 22, 2007, after a brief illness. Rev. Taylor was the pastor of South Highland Free Will Baptist Church for the past 21 years.

Visitation was Thursday, May 24, 2007, from 6-9 p.m. at South Highland Church.

The body will lie in state Friday, May 25, at the church from noon-2 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Danny Williams and the Rev. Rick Cash officiating. Prayer will be led by Dr. Dan Ireland. Burial will be at Colbert Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Taylor was preceded in death by his father, Dorsey Taylor, of Hamilton, Ala., and two brothers, Foy Hugh and Edward Taylor.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Weatherly Taylor; his daughter, Tammy Taylor; his son, Rev. Kevin Taylor (Kanda); two grandchildren, Derek and Kayla Taylor; his mother, Lois Taylor; one sister, Audrey Fikes; five brothers, Max, Dwight, Kerry, Doug and Phillip Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calvin Coolidge McDonald, age 82 of Moulton (formerly of Winfield), died Monday, May 7, 2007 at NHC Healthcare in Moulton. Mr. McDonald was born June 15, 1924 in Fayette County to Walter Russell McDonald and Mary Frances Erwin McDonald. He was a resident of Zephryhills, FL for 26 years before moving back to the Siloam Community in Fayette County in 1989. He was a graduate of Winfield High School and Auburn University; retired from FHA and was a salesman with Red Hat Feeds in Decatur. Calvin was a WWII Navy veteran, a member of Winfield Masonic Lodge #304, and a member of Winfield Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, R.G. and Howard McDonald; and his wife, Erdine Langston McDonald who passed away February 27, 1999.

He is survived by two sons, Gary (Bonnie) McDonald of Moulton, Larry (Rosie) McDonald of Naples, FL; a sister, Mrs. Jewiel Williamson of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren, Donna Narmore, Jeremy Lee, Deana Millwood, Kelli McDonald, Shellie Lee, Stacy Rhodes, and Sam Hess; five great grandchildren, Logan Millwood, Rachel Millwood, Alexus Rhodes, Makalah Rhodes, and David Rhodes; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A native of Guin, AL, she was born Aug. 15, 1939, she was the daughter of the late James Wiley and Beulah Mae Knight Green, Guin. She was a life-long resident of Guin. "Gimmer" was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. The highlight of Gimmer's day was spending time with her granddaughters and great granddaughters. She loved wrestling, crossword puzzles, a good western on tv and last but not least Elvis Presley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by daughter, Carolyn Jean Chaney; brothers, James, Grady, and Roy Green; and sisters, Margie Keith, Jimmie Nell Hayes, Louvadie Miles, and Lois Cobb.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 21, 2007, at 2 p.m. from the N orwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Mt. Willing Cemetery. Bro. William Etkins was the officiating minister.

Survivors include her daughters - Kathy Vindenich (Bill) Perry, Tallahassee, Fla., and Rose (Jimmy) Harrison, Guin; brother - Clark Knight, Ridge, Ill.; granddaughters - Jennifer and Jessica Black and Amanda Bishop, all of Guin; grandson - Ben Harrison, Haleyville; great-grandchildren - Cayla and Gracie Howell and Malorie, Melanie, and Macie Bishop; and a host of nieces of nephews.

Lucille Emerson Wooten, 82, Hodges, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2007, in the Helen Keller Hospital in Tuscumbia.

Born on Sept. 10, 1924, in Vina, she was the daughter of the late Mack C. and Martha Jane Mims Emerson. She was a seamstress and was a member of the Hodges Convention Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Nichols and Willie Wooten; son, Kennith Nichols; and brother, Ralph Emerson. \

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 21, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. from the Hodges Convention Baptist Church with burial in the Old Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Bro. Kent Walker and Bro. George Jones were the officiating ministers.

Survivors include her sister - Sara Baker, Hackleburg ; daughter-in-law - Jean Nichols, Hodges; grandchildren - Scottie (Lorrie) Nichols, Tuscumbia, and Kevin and David Nichols, both of Hodges; great-grandchildren - Bethanie and Baylie Nichols, both of Tuscumbia; step-children - Tommy Wooten and Becky Rich, both of Hamilton, Danny (Judy) Wooten, Vina, and Norma (Dale) Sterling, Hodges; several step-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Betty G. Chapin, age 74, of Florence, AL., died Monday, May 14, 2007, at ECM Hospital.

She was a native of Haleyville, Ala., and of the Pentecostal faith, a member of International Marine Machinists Union, and retired from the flight department of Abbot Laboratories.

Visitation will be 12 noon-2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at the Pentecostals of Florence located across the street from Murphy Brothers Nursery on Savannah Highway. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. in the church, with burial in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be the Rev. Bobby Crosswhite.

Mrs. Chapin was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer A. Chapin; parents, James and Thelma Crosswhite; and two brothers, Gene and James Franklin Crosswhite.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann Miller and husband, Travis, of Salem, Wis.; son, Steve Grider and fiance, Hazel, of Florence; grandchildren, Caleb and Ethan Miller; three brothers, the Rev. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Franklin County and member of Eastside Church of Christ.

Woodruff, Harry Copeland - Age 80 - Russellville, AL

Harry Copeland Woodruff, 80, of Russellville, Ala., passed away Monday, May 21, 2007, at his home after an extended illness.

Mr. Woodruff lived most of his life in Franklin County and was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church in Russellville.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 23, 2007, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Pinkard Funeral Home, Russellville. The service will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Dr. Gene Balding officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memory Gardens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Millie Woodruff, and brother, Jack Woodruff.

Survivors include his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Doris Hendrix Woodruff; son, the Rev. Mark Woodruff and wife, Patty, Bear Creek, Ala.; sister, Jimmie Woodruff Pilati and husband, Karl, Russellville, Ala.; grandchildren, Mark Woodruff Jr., Woodville, Ala., Elizabeth Woodruff Hale and husband, Keith, Bartlett, Tenn., John Paul Woodruff and wife, Kim, Phil Campbell, Ala.; great-grandchildren, Melissa Hale, Bryant Woodruff and Benjamin Hale.

Harry Woodruff was a 1945 graduate of Russellville High School and served in the Army in Italy shortly after World War II. He enjoyed a 38-year career at TVA as a medical technologist in the Division of Medical Services.

He was an avid traveler and was a member of Shoals Sams Camping Club. He was also a member of the Double Springs Hunting Club.

Pallbearers will be Floyd "Sonny" Flanagan, Gene Ellison, Ricky Hall, Gene Pace, Calvin Parmer and Floyd Tirey. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of First Baptist Church, Russellville, and the Pritchard Sunday School class.

The family wants to thank Hospice of the Shoals for their kind and loving care, as well as the four private caregivers who have watched over Harry and loved him as their own for more than 15 months.

Grissom, Robert Robert Reed "Bob" - Age 60 - Russellville, AL

Robert Reed (Bob) Grissom, 60, Russellville, Ala., died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at his home.

He was a lifelong resident of Franklin County and a member of Rockwood Baptist Church. He was a 1964 graduate of Russellville High School and a member of the Russellville National Guard for six years.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2007, at Pinkard Funeral Home, in Russellville, with Brother David Jones and Brother Joe Lenox officiating. Brother Gerald Borden will perform Masonic rites at graveside. Burial will be in Franklin Memory Gardens. Visitation was Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bob was owner and operator of Grissom Car Wash in downtown Russellville for many years. He, along with his wife, Judy, and son, David, owned and operated Diamond House Jewelry in Russellville for 24 years. Presently, he and his son, David, own Alabama Gun & Pawn in Russellville, Alabama Title & Pawn, in Haleyville, Alabama Title Pawn in Moulton and Red Bay, Alabama Super Pawn, in Sheffield, and Cash Spot, in Russellville.

Brother Robert Reed Grissom was a member of Russellville Masonic Lodge No. 371. He became a Master Mason on Sept. 11, 1975. He was elected Master of Russellville Lodge No. 371 in June 1978 and served until June 1979.

He also enjoyed the outdoors. Most recently, he enjoyed the deer hunting trips, the pheasant hunting trips to South Dakota, trap shooting, fishing and boating on Little Bear Lake with his son, family and friends.

Mr. Grissom received a special gift from God on July 15, 2005. A granddaughter, Kate Reed Grissom, named after his mother.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Judy Keeton Grissom, Russellville, Ala.; son, David Reed Grissom and wife, Melissa, Russellville, Ala.; granddaughter, Kate Reed Grissom, Russellville, Ala.; sisters, Dot Denney, Russellville, Ala., Ann Tompkins and husband, R.H., Belgreen; nephews, Mark Tompkins and wife, Tamra, Mike Tompkins and wife, Ginger, Randy Denney and wife, Hope; niece, Pam Hester and husband, Tyrus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Kate Grissom, Russellville, Ala.

Pallbearers will include Tom Pace, Danny McDowell, Ron McCulloch, James King, Bill Jackson, Ray Fretwell, Jerry Rains, Billy Fuller Jr., Curtis Grissom and Robin Grissom.

Honorary pallbearers will include Milford Brown, Larry Morris, David Hicks, Eric Harris, Rickie Harris, Jeff Smith, Patrick James, Milton Garrison, Rhuel Holland and Billy Trapp.

She is survived by daughter, Patsy Cochran and husband, Billy, of Russellville; son, Mike Malone and wife, Beth, of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren, Timothy Gamble, Chester Gamble, Steve Malone, Scott Malone; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, Jordon Gamble; three step-grandchildren, Leilani Boyett, Curtis Cochran, Patsy Cochran; six step-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

We were very blessed to have had her in our lives, and she will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by husband, Ford McNatt, of Russellville; daughters, Janie Spurgeon, of Russellville, Darnell George, of Sheffield, Doris Vincent and husband, Greg, of Russellville; son, Scotty McNatt, of Vancouver, Canada; sister, Arrie Madden, of Brunswick, Ohio; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

Summerford, J.C. "Jay" - Age 77 - Mantachie, MS

J.C. (Jay) Summerford, of Mantachie, Miss., 77, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at the home of his daughter in Killen.

He was born Aug. 22, 1929, to the late Arthur and Hillary Harp Summerford.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, of Fulton, Miss. He was a retired supervisor from LaRoche Industries, of Cherokee, and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.

He graduated from Tremont High School, Tremont, Miss., and from East Mississippi College, Scooba, Miss.

Survivors include his wife, Dot Donald Summerford, of Mantachie, Miss.; one daughter, Cathy Summerford Malone (Phillip), of Killen, Ala.; one son, Jeff Summerford (Elizabeth), of Decatur, Ala.; two grandchildren, Matthew Malone, of Birmingham, Ala., and Mickalyn Summerford, of Decatur, Ala.; two sisters, Nelda South (Billy Joe), of Fulton, Miss., and Brenda Summerford, of Tremont, Miss.; two brothers, Carl Summerford (Wanda), of Fulton, Miss., and Paul Summerford (Yvonne), of Tremont, Miss.

He was preceded in death by his son, J.C. "Mickey" Summerford; his parents; four brothers, Bobby, Jimmy, Douglas and Hoyt Summerford; and one sister, Mary Summerford.

Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Monday at Morrison Funeral Home, Cherokee. A graveside memorial service will follow at Cherokee Memorial Gardens, with Dr. Kenneth Bass officiating.

Nephews will be pallbearers, and honorary pallbearers will be employees and retirees of LaRoche Industries, Cherokee.
