Guin, Al died Monday, October 1, 2007 in the Northwest Medical Center in
Winfield, Alabama.
Born in Monroe County, Mississippi. She is the daughter of the late John Thomas
and Mary Destie Motes Terry and the wife of the late Robert Lee Bobo. She had
lived in Guin most of her life and was a member of the Piney Grove Free Will
Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary (Ben) Davis of Ragland, Alabama and Julia
Faye Woods of Adamsville, Alabama, a daughter in law Annette Bobo of Guin,
Alabama, 10 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Otto, Milton, and Cullie Terry and a sister Vera Faught.

Letha Vernon Speakman Monk, age 73, of Hamilton, AL., died October 3, 2007 at the North Mississippi Medical Center.
The viewing was held at Center Grove Baptist Church, Cullman, Friday, October 5, 2007, beginning at 11:30 a.m. A service celebrating the life of Mrs. Monk followed the viewing with Rev. Ronnie Elmore officiating. Heritage Funeral Home in Cullman directed the services. Following the service, Mrs. Monk was laid to rest beside her husband, Sam.
Mrs. Monk was preceded in death by her father, Rufus Speakman, her mother, Hassie Speakman, two sisters, Aldalene Douglas and Corrine Fowler and her loving husband, Sammie Wayne Monk.
Mrs. Monk lived an exemplary life of love and service, always giving, accepting and loving everyone in her path of life.
Mrs. Monk is survived by her three daughters, Donna (Mike) Manns, Deb (Kevin) Bowers and Sandra (Brent) Boyett. Nine grandchildren, Scott Olson, Robbie and Bradley Williams, Nicholas and Candice Lee, Kate and Sarah Golden, and Austin Paige and Zachary Boyett; Eight great-grandchildren, Spencer, Grace and William Olson, and Sammy, Lucas, Julie, Ashley and Brittney Williams; Seven sisters Aldena Ashley, Mildred Green, Jewell Long, Wilidean Pace, Carolyn Hafer, Betty Ann Darby and Mary Dyer; and one brother Rufus Speakman.

She was born Oct. 17, 1920, in Belmont, MS to Rubin and Mary Cranford Sparks.
She was a graduate of Belmont High School where she tied for valedictorian. She
attended Freed-Hardeman, George Peabody, Mississippi State and the University of
Alabama. She held a B.S. degree and master's degree. She taught school at
Tishomingo High School, Tishomingo, MS., Paden, Dennis, Red Bay High School, Red
Bay, AL and Northwest Alabama State Junior College, retiring in 1983. She was a
life long member of the Church of Christ and spent most of her years teaching
Sunday School at Tishomingo Church of Christ.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Belmont
with Bro. Steve Hodgin and Bro. Claudie Jones officiating. Burial will be in the

Sr. - Age 75 - Tupelo, MS
TUPELO – Lea Clayton Paslay Sr., 75, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at the
North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness.
He was born April 7, 1932, in Como to the late Dr. Byran Hicklin and Etta Decell
Rogers Paslay. He attended Sardis High School, where he was selected as an All
American football player. He then went on to University of Mississippi,
graduating in 1956 with a degree in physical education. At Ole Miss he played
quarterback and halfback, and was later drafted by the NFL to play for the New
York Giants. He was twice selected All SEC. He served in the U.S. Army during
the Korean War. He coached one year at Ripley High School before coming to
Tupelo where he later became head football coach and athletic director. He also
served as a Southeastern Conference official. After coaching, he began his
career in the insurance field and later began his own business, Lea Paslay
Insurance Inc. Very active in the community, he coached little league football
and served as a Cub Scout leader. He also served on the Board of Directors for
the Alpha House for 14 years. He was instrumental in starting the adult league
softball in Tupelo and was honored by having a field at Veteran's Park named for
him. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid fan of Ole Miss athletics.
He loved spending time with his family. He was a member of St. James Catholic
Church, where he served as a fourth degree Knight.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church with Father
Henry Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.

her home.
She was born Feb. 14, 1948 in Haleyville, Alabama to the late Barney K. and Inez
Moss. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God.

Rev. Doyle B. Cooper, age 68, Guin, AL., formerly of Tupelo, died Thursday,
Oct. 18, 2007, near Houston from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born July 2, 1939, in
East Tupelo to Howard C. and Loreda Christian Cooper. He was raised in the
Belden area and was a 1957 graduate of Belden High School. After high school, he
joined the United States Air Force. He had resided in Guin and was the Pastor of
Old Paths Baptist Church. Earlier in his ministry, he was pastor of Pleasant
Ridge Baptist Church in Tremont for over 11 years. His ministry also included
preaching the gospel on Unity Broadcasting Channel 39 in Fulton, and
www.sermonaudio.com. He enjoyed shopping/searching for miscellaneous electronic
items and attending automobile auctions. He loved his family and the time he
spent with them and was especially close to his nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues
with Bro. Grady Davidson and Bro. Charles White officiating. Burial will be in
Union Cemetery near Belden.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Cooper of Guin, Ala.; his mother, Loreda
Cooper; his step-children, Gary Purser and his wife, Dorinda, of Newman, Ga.,
David Purser and his wife, Shay, of Cottondale, Ala., and Steve Purser of

Rex Arley Avery, age 87, of Hamilton, passed away at his home in Hamilton on
Friday, October 26, 2007. Rex was predeceased by two wives, Lynn and Mae Avery.
He is survived by his children, Marla (Ed) Minter, of Hamilton, and a son, Allen
(Becky) Avery of Haleyville; three grandsons, Greg (Jenna) Miller, a member of
the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; and Andy Miller,
101st Airborne, currently serving in Iraq; and Hunter Avery, Haleyville; one
great-grandson, Logan Miller; and he is expecting his first great-granddaughter,
Alexis Miller, in December; two nephews, Howard K. Avery of Greer, South
Carolina; and Danny Avery of Hodges, Alabama.
Rex was born June 7, 1920 in Hodges, Alabama to Daniel Webster and Tempie Gowder
Avery, the youngest of four sons. His brothers were Grover, Jasper, and Rea.
Rex served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in the
Aleutian Islands. After his honorable discharge from the military, Rex returned
to Hodges where he drove a bus for the Franklin Co. school system and was
elected and served a six-year term as a member of the Franklin County Board of
Education.
Rex’s career included 27 years as a Conservation Officer for the Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources; Meter Reader and Crosswalk Patrolman for the
City of Hamilton; and member of the Marion County Board of Registrars.
Rex was a member of the Hamilton Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, where he served as the Branch President for nine years. He
was also a member of the Hamilton Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and
the American Legion for over 54 years, where he served as Commander of Post 91
for over 20 years; he was also elected to serve as Chairman of the Marion County
Democratic Executive Committee for seven years.
Rex was the President of the Hodges School Reunion and the Avery Reunion for
many years. He continued to be active in church, politics, veterans’
organizations, and family events until the time of his death.
Under the direction of Patriarch Evan T. Nebeker and President William Hysaw,
funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 30, at the Hamilton Funeral Home
with interment at Hodges City Cemetery.

Community. James had served in the US Army and worked many years at Detroit
Slacks and later was a D J for the radio station in Winfield, AL, WKXM and in
Vernon at the WJEC/ WVSA southern gospel station. He also enjoyed farming and
the Outdoors. He loved Music and taught many piano and singing lessons over a
large area of Lamar and Marion County.

Born on March 3, 1937, he was the son of the late John Thomas and Hattie Ingle Weeks. He was a resident of the Rock City area most of his life and was a resident of Winfield most recently. He was a 1955 Winfield City High School graduate. He was the owner and operator of Weeks Coal Co. for 23 years. He was retired from Jim Walter Resources #5 in Brookwood with nine years of service. He was previously owner of H & W Building Supply. He was a member of the Carbon Hill National Guard. He also attended the East Winfield Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Kyle Weeks; sister, Helen O ’Mary; brothers, Ed, Letus, Letha and Buddy Weeks; and two infant brothers.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at 6 p.m. from the McGraw Memorial Chapel of Miles Funeral Home with burial in the West Alabama Memorial Gardens in Gu-Win. Bryan Howell and Terry Miles were the officiating ministers.

Murphree. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Red Bay. He was a U.S. Navy
veteran of World War II, serving with the Escort Carrier Force U.S. Pacific
Fleet. He served on the USS Markin Island (CVE-93) Flagship, the first U.S.
Escort Carrier to anchor in Japanese home waters.

resident of Red Bay. She was a seamstress and a member of the Church of God.

Jessie Lee Pharr,
78, of Pomona Park, FL., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at Hospice Haven
in Palatka, Fla.
She was born Nov. 15, 1928,
in Itawamba County to Orville Graydon and Vera Lee Jackson Hargett. She was a
homemaker and a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Kenosha, Wis.,
while living there. After raising six children in Kenosha, she and her husband
moved to Hodges, Ala., and then to Pomona Park, Fla. She was a wonderful example
of a praying Christian woman who loved her family, church and friends. She
attended Church of God in Crescent City, Fla.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pilot Hill Missionary Baptist Church with
Jimmy Lucas officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the
funeral home. The body will lie in state from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the

Sam Spruiell, age 82, of
Sulligent, AL., passed away Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at Golden Living Center in
Winfield, Ala.
He was born Sept. 17, 1925,
in Lamar County, Ala., to the late Haston A. and Nettie Lou Belk Spruiell. He
was a disabled U.S. Army veteran of World War II and recipient of the Purple
Heart and other medals. He was a farmer, and the owner and operator of Spruiell
Grocery for 32 years. He was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. He was a
trustee of Sulligent High School for 24 years and the longest serving member of
the Lamar County Hospital Trust Fund.

from a hospital.
In May 2007, he celebrated his 50th year in the Opry. Porter Wagoner was born
August 12, 1927 of Irish-German heritage in West Plains, Missouri, located in
the Ozarks of Missouri near the Arkansas border. He was 80.
The Grand Ole Opry announced Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, that funeral arrangements

Democratic Committee; member of White’s Chapel Church of Christ; and the widow of Jackie Bruce Turner who died August 11, 2007. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother in-law, Sarah and Burcy Johnson; and a nephew, Lonnie Rutledge Box. She is survived by three sons, Tommy (Donna) Turner of Eldridge, Jeff Turner of Winfield, and Chris Turner of Mobile; four granddaughters, Heather Bozeman, Melody Lakey, Kassie Jones, and Ginger Bowen; four great grandchildren, Jake Bozeman, Clay Jones, Tucker Bowen and Alexa Bozeman; two sisters, Betty Box of Winfield and Barbara Jones of Fayette; special friend, Nelda Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 7: 00 PM from White’s Chapel Church of Christ with Roger Hubbert and John Brown officiating. Burial followed Wednesday morning in the White’s Chapel Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Keith Bozeman, Brad Bowen, Kevin Lakey, Timmy Jones, Steve Johnson, and Edwin "Punk" Turner. Miles Funeral Home of Winfield, directed the services.

Age 52 - Winfield, AL
Mrs. Wanda Sue Murray Vickery, age 52 of Winfield, passed away Thursday, October
4, 2007 at her residence. Wanda was born on August 18, 1955 in Missouri a
daughter of Charles and Louise Tucker Murray; graduated high school near St.
Louis, MO; resident of Winfield for past 33 years; previously employed with
Cardinal Drive In at Winfield with 17 years of service; and the widow of Lecil
Junior Vickery. She was loved by everyone and was a very giving person. In
addition to her husband and mother, she was preceded in death by two infant
sisters. Survivors include two sons, Kevin (Amanda) Murray and Gary Wayne
Vickery, both of Winfield; one grandson, Ethan Murray; father, Charles Murray;
one brother, Charles Ray Murray; one sister, Sharon Rheeton, all of St. Louis,
MO; one half-sister, Betty Davis of Nauvoo; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at 2:00 PM from the
McGraw Memorial Chapel of Miles Funeral Home. Rev. William E. Atkinson was the
officiating minister. Burial followed in the Fairview Cemetery with Miles
Funeral Home of Winfield directing the service.
Clara Mae Martin
Clara Mae Martin, 95, of Paragould, AR., died Friday, October 19, 2007, at
Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was born October 1, 1912, in Itawamba
County, MS., the daughter of the late James William and Sally Ann (Webb) Martin.
She was a homemaker and employed at Arkansas Methodist Hospital for 14 and a
half years.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dolph Martin; one son, Phillip
Martin; a daughter, Jackie Willie and sisters, Ruth White, Ruby Baker, Lorene
Lindsey and Eleanor Cude.
Clara is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Carol Martin of
Tulsa, Okla., Larry and Jonnie Martin of Atoka, Tenn., Gary and Kathy Martin of
Cullman, Ala., and Bruce Martin of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; a daughter and son-in-law,
Joyce and Bob Harig of Paragould; one sister, Cora Lee Lambert of Nashville,
Tenn.; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Heath Colonial Chapel
with Tim Wooldridge officiating. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery. The
family will receive friends today from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials
may be made to the Paragould Children’s Home or the American Cancer Society.
